The Origins of Naked Yoga (And How Nude Workouts Changed My Life)

By Sasha

I’ve always been the kind of woman who prefers to feel life directly. Barefoot in the grass, or anywhere my feet carry me. Skin in the sun, pshhh, forget the sunscreen. Four boys running around me while I’m somehow juggling a thousand other things in between…does life ever slow down?

Life has been good; but I didn’t always feel in my body, not to say fully aware in the present moments of the fullness of this life.

Where Naked Yoga Actually Comes From

Before we talk about what naked yoga and nude workouts did for me, we have to go back, because this isn’t a new practice.

So, what are the origins?

In ancient India, there were yogic traditions, like the Naga Sadhus, that practiced in a state of complete renunciation. This meant no clothing, no attachment. Just body, breath, and spirit.

They didn’t practice this way for attention, or performance. They did this out of ritualistic devotion to ultimate truth.

The body was never something to hide for these ancient yogis. It was a vehicle to transcend through. And it wasn’t just the yogis in India that were practicing au naturel…even in ancient Greece, athletes trained and competed naked. The word “gymnasium” itself comes from gymnos, meaning naked. Did you know that?!

There was an understanding that the human body, in its natural state, wasn’t something shameful, it was powerful.

Somewhere along the way, we forgot that.

Rhy recognizes the body as a means for transcendence. Watch as she skillfully teaches you how to Bend and Release too!

Modern Naked Yoga & Nude Workouts

Today, naked yoga and nude workouts are re-emerging, but with a different kind of intention. Most of us don’t practice with a mindset of renunciation. We practice for reconnection, depth, and awareness.

With guidance from expert trainers, these practices are being brought into modern life in a way that supports real people, householders as the ancient yogis would say. Ordinary people with busy lives, families, careers, stress, all of it.

This naked movement isn’t about escaping life high up in the Himalays; it’s about learning how to feel yourself inside of the journey of this incarnation.

How I Found It (Or Maybe… It Found Me)

If you would have told me years ago that I’d be writing about naked yoga, I definitely would have laughed.

Not because I wasn’t open, or close minded, but because I didn’t realize how much I needed it.

I was doing all the “right” things. Perfect daughter, perfect mom, perfect manager in a big corporation…perfect performer, if we are being honest here.

I was working hard, raising my boys, loving more deeply with every passing year and partner. I was showing up for everyone.

And still… there was a subtle, and sad disconnection. It was that sneaking disconnect you don’t notice right away because life is so full.

Most of us feel a disconnect in our bodies. Sasha and Asana will brilliantly guide you back into reconnection with your body in Heavenly Hips and Spicy Strength.

The First Shift: Awareness

The first time I committed to nude workouts, something clicked almost immediately.

it was much quieter than I anticipated. Because when you’re so used to the hustle and bustle of every day life, you start to expect that every thing runs the same race. I became aware of things I had been missing: the way my breath moved through my body, where tension was accumulating, how often I was moving without actually feeling or without awareness even.

I realized that without clothes, there’s nothing buffering you from the experience. It’s just you, boo.

From Performance to Presence

Before naked yoga, movement for me was often about output always filtered with goals of: getting stronger, staying fit, keeping up. But this? This was different. For the first time in a long time I was dropping into presence that I hadn’t felt in a very long time. I learned how to slow down enough to actually feel each movement, I wasn’t rushing through it. And that was eye opening for me.

Because I was…rushing, holding, pushing. Even in a life filled with love.

How Nude Workouts Changed My Life

I don’t say this lightly, nude workouts changed my relationship with myself. They softened the way I speak to my body, grounded me in all of the koshas (layers that compose human existence-from physical to spiritual), and moved through me in ways I didn’t even know I needed.

The practice made me more patient, with my kids, with my partners, with my work.

Most importantly…they reminded me that my body isn’t something to manage, like everything else in my life.

Faith, Spirituality, and the Body

My spirituality has always been a big part of my life. I believe in Jesus, I believe in love, I believe in something greater than all of us. And I don’t see my body as separate from that. If anything, practices like naked yoga have deepened that connection more than I could have imagined.

Because when you strip everything away, literally and metaphorically, you’re left with something incredibly raw, and there’s something very sacred about that.

Sasha knows that our bodies aren’t separate from our spiritual path and she loves to share this with others. Join her, Asana, and special guest in Strength in Threes to back to a deeper relationship with self.

Why This Matters Now

We live in a world that constantly pulls us out of ourselves. Checking our phone every couple of minutes, meeting work expectations, all of these roles we must play.

Naked yoga and nude workouts offer something rare: a realization, a space where you don’t have to hold the facade of every day living where you have it all together…because we do…have it all together, right?

The practice offered you a space where you don’t have to be anything for anyone else.

Feeling the ming-body connection isn’t optional when you have expert trainers like Rhy and Asana guiding you back into deeper awareness and presence.

If You’re Feeling the Pull

Here is my challenge to you. If you’ve ever felt disconnected from your body. If you’ve been doing everything “right” but still feel off. If you’re curious about what it might feel like to experience yourself more fully. You don’t have to jump all the way in, but start with awareness.

And Audri & Asana are here when you’re ready, explore practices guided by expert trainers who understand that this is deeper than just movement.

TL;DR

Naked yoga and nude workouts aren’t about being provocative. They’re about reconnecting to your body. Rooted in ancient traditions and guided by expert trainers today, this practice helped me slow down, feel more, and show up more fully in my life as a mom, partner, and professional.
